Chinese culture is full of poetry, and not of money!

In comparison with Westerners, Chinese like very much to recall their 5 000 year long history!

When I was 6 years old, my father, a poor tailor, asked me to learn by heard Chinese poetry written in Tang dynasty (625 – 901) and Song dynasty (965 – 1265). From then on, I adore Chinese poetry, full of simplicity and beauty. Examples through Chinese charecters:

When the ear of wheat (禾) is burned by the heat of the sun (火), Autumn(秋) has arrived. Indeed, The word autumn in Chinese is composed of the ear of wheat and fire: 禾 + 火 = 秋.

When autumn (秋) arrives, the heart (心) becomes sad as cloud is all over head. In Chinese, the word of sadness is composed of autumn and heart.

Chinese culture is full of poetry, and not of money!

Why Chinese like to take a western first name?

At the invitation of a large French company, I went to Kuala Lumpur in 2015 to provide a training for company’s 60 Asian sales staff: how to work effectively with Western peers?
Of the 60 people participating in the training, 20 were from mainland China, 6 from Taiwan, and 4 from Hong Kong, and other 30 from Japan, South Korea and India. During the teamwork, I suddenly found that half of the 30 Chinese from mainland, HongKong and Taiwan had Western names: Chris, Anna, James… Non of Japanese, Koreans and Indians took them.
When discussing with many Chinese, I get different answers:
1) Chinese names are difficult to be pronounced, they take it as they are very pracmatic; 2) Chinese are very open to other culture and adopt western name easily;
3) In Chinese history, many other cultures are assimilated by Chinese mainstream culture, so no worry to take other name; 4) Many Chinese have just lost their self esteem and take western name with no concern 5) or they take West as a model and just to resemble to Westerners ……

Difference of negotiation pattern between Chinese and Europeans

I have participated in many Chinese negotiations with Europeans. I draw these 6 key differences between them:

1. Chinese like at first to strengthen friendship, while Westerners put emphasis on facts and get personal feelings outside the negotiating table;

2. Chinese like to balance the interests of all inside parties, and the negotiating team is bigger, while the Western negotiating team has a clear authorization and is smaller. Attention is paid by Westerns to the details rather than the general shared concessions for reaching consensus;

3. Chinese seek harmony by asking both parties to make concessions when there is a conflict, while Westerners pay attention to rationality of analysis and defend their interests;

4. Chinese hope to reach a rough working principle, constantly adapting it during cooperation, while Westerners are eager to set the rules of cooperation in order to prevent conflicts;

5. When implementing contracts, Chinese are more flexible with contract terms, while Westerners are more concentrated on contract’s execution;

6. Chinese are influenced by traditional culture and tend to act according to Sun Tzu’s Art of War and & 36 stratagems, while Westerners believe that certain moral standards must be respected in negotiations..

Let’s help Chinese protect their finger!

Over the past 30 years, China has become the world factory, with the support of globla capitals seeking all the time to maximize the profits. Chinese become richer but with huge cost. Only in the province of Guangdong, almost 60 000 fingers of Chinese workers were cut by their machines every year. Terrible humain price!

Also over the past 30 years, China has developped some Hi Tech companies like Huuawei and Chinese will have possibilities to work elsewhere than in factories, thus avoiding their finger to be cut. Now USA aims to kill Huawei and contain the Chinese only in factories.

Chinese like America and every year thousand young Chinese fight to be enrolled by US universities.

Hope Americains understand that every country has the right to progress technically and creat safer and more lucrative jobs. Let’s Americain and Chinese work togather on a win win basis and especially help thousands Chinese not let their finger cut every year.
